Day 1

Welcome to Collaborative Conversations

OVERVIEW

In this series kick-off, Dr. Doug Fisher introduces the goals for participating educators and provides an overview of what’s to come. You’ll find out what to expect over the course of the series and start your deep dive into collaborative conversations.

PREPARATION

Prepare for this active professional learning experience by creating a system for taking notes during the session, keeping a journal to reflect on your own classroom practices, and keep track of what you’ve learned so far

ASSIGNMENT

REFLECTION: COLLABORATIVE CONVERSATIONS

Over the course of this series, Doug Fisher will task you with an assignment each day. Sometimes the task will be a classroom task and other days it will be a reflection task. You can use this Professional Reflection Journal to record your reflections.

After viewing today’s video, reflect on the following:

  • What has worked in the past when you’ve asked students to work together?
  • What hasn’t worked for you?
  • How comfortable are you with collaborative conversations in your classroom?
  • What do you need to know to create opportunities for students to talk to each other?

RESOURCE GUIDE

PROFESSIONAL REFLECTION JOURNAL

This journal can be used to reflect on what you have learned as you develop strategies for engaging your students in collaborative conversations.

TODAY’S TAKEAWAY

DAY 1

In collaborative learning, students are talking together, interacting with their peers and using academic language. For the next 30 days, we’ll focus on that aspect of instruction, getting students to talk to each other.
