TODAY’S TAKEAWAY | DAY 2, 30 DAYS TO CLOSE READING

We want to think about the text that is worthy of a close reading. Texts that give up their meaning right away aren't going to work for close reading." –Dr. Doug Fisher

OVERVIEW

On Day 2, Dr. Fisher focuses on selecting texts that are worthy of a close read, diving into quantitative and qualitative factors that contribute to making a text complex.

  • Learn about choosing texts in appropriate grade-level bands (based on Lexile® measures) so students can practice skills and stretch themselves with complex text.
  • Delve into qualitative factors of text complexity, including levels of meaning, text structure, language conventions, and knowledge demands.

Dr. Fisher invites you to choose a piece of complex text and analyze the qualitative factors that make that text complex using a rubric he developed. Teachers will then use this data to inform which areas of the text require instruction in close reading.

PREPARATION

PREPARE FOR THIS ACTIVE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE BY:

  • downloading and saving provided resources; and
  • locating examples of complex text from your upcoming curricular units to analyze for close reading instruction.

DAY 2 ASSIGNMENT

SELECT AND ANALYZE TEXTS FOR CLOSE READING

  • Select a piece of complex text. Analyze it to ensure that the text is in your grade-level band, using the Quantitative Measure: Lexile Levels Chart to measure text complexity.
  • Then, use the Qualitative Measures of Text Complexity Rubric to identify the factors of qualitative text complexity in the text. Be sure to focus on all four factors as you analyze the text. This will help you identify the areas of the text that need close reading skills instruction.

RESOURCE GUIDE

QUANTITATIVE MEASURE: LEXILE LEVELS CHART

Use the Lexile Framework for Reading by MetaMetrics® to measure the quantitative value of text. Lexile measures can be used to find reading materials to meet and challenge individual student reading abilities. All Achieve3000 articles are tailored for 12 different Lexile levels in English and 8 in Spanish.

QUALITATIVE MEASURES OF TEXT COMPLEXITY RUBRIC

Use this rubric designed by Dr. Fisher to assess the qualitative factors of text complexity to ensure a reader-text match and to identify areas of text that need instruction.
